Why Corps Members and Others Must Take Drug Tests: NDLEA Boss

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has articulated its reasoning behind advocating for drug integrity assessments for youth corps members and individuals intending to marry. NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), stated that this initiative is designed to deter substance abuse and facilitate early intervention. In a discussion with the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, the NDLEA leader emphasized that this initiative is not punitive; individuals who test positive can receive treatment for drug dependence and related health issues before their situation worsens. He extended his congratulations to the NYSC leader on his recent appointment, characterizing the scheme as a national asset and a significant tool for fostering national unity. He remarked, 'The drug epidemic continues to wreak havoc on our youth, families, and communities across the nation. There is no region in the country that is free from drug abuse challenges.' He noted that one in seven Nigerians aged 15 to 64 engages in drug use. While acknowledging the efforts to limit the accessibility of these substances, he stressed the necessity of collaborating with all stakeholders, including the NYSC, to significantly reduce the demand for drugs among the youth, with drug integrity testing being a key strategy in this endeavor. He further indicated that efforts to reduce drug supply must be complemented by initiatives aimed at decreasing demand through preventive strategies, counseling, and rehabilitation. 'These are crucial areas for enhanced collaboration. The introduction of War Against Drug Abuse clubs in the camps is commendable. Another vital aspect of our partnership is the implementation of drug integrity tests for youth corps members. This represents a significant effort to reduce drug demand. Similarly, we propose that both parties in a marriage should present a drug-free certificate.' Marwa emphasized that early detection of drug use is crucial to prevent the progression to addiction, which can lead to psychiatric issues and pose a threat to both the individual and society.
