Binani, a Former Adamawa APC Candidate for Governor, Switches to ADC
The 2023 governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Senator Aishatu Ahmed Binani, has switched allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Binani's media aide, Maulud Usman, confirmed this development to DAILY POST on Sunday afternoon, explaining that the politician arrived in Yola on Saturday evening and announced her defection to a select group of family members and friends.
On Sunday, Adamawa residents were greeted with social media reports regarding Binani's defection, although official confirmation was not immediately available.
Further elaborating on the situation on Sunday afternoon, Maulud indicated that the announcement was made discreetly, without any media coverage invitation.
He also mentioned that Binani, who served as the senator for Adamawa Central Zone at the time she ran for the governorship in 2023, would return to Yola shortly for a more formal association with her new party.
Binani narrowly lost to the incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election.
DAILY POST notes that Binani's departure from the APC was anticipated, as her relationship with the party's leadership had been strained.
The APC leadership in the state has been perceived as showing what many consider an undue preference for the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who, due to his federal position, leads the APC in Adamawa.
It is thought that Binani was uneasy with this dynamic, given the political competition between her and Ribadu.
Ribadu was among the five individuals who lost the APC nomination to Binani in 2023 and is believed to still harbor ambitions of becoming governor or endorsing a candidate in his place for the 2027 elections.
Governor Okpebolo Explains Why Peter Obi Needs to let me Know Before Traveling to Edo.
The governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebolo, has refuted allegations of threatening Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 Presidential candidate.
Okpebolo has faced backlash for asserting that Obi must notify him prior to visiting the state, cautioning that his security would not be assured if he neglects to do so.
During a defection rally last Friday, the governor also ridiculed Obi for asserting that he does not 'give shishi', despite having donated N15Million to St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences for project completion in the institution.
Okpebolo further alleged that Obi's visit to the state coincided with a resurgence of violence in the area.
Nevertheless, the governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, issued a statement on Sunday clarifying that his comments had been misinterpreted.
The statement read:
"The Edo State Government has been made aware of various misinterpretations regarding the recent comments made by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, concerning Peter Obi's visit to the state.
"It is crucial to clarify that the governor did not threaten Mr. Obi; rather, he highlighted the necessity for high-profile individuals, especially those with political exposure, to inform and seek security clearance from the governor before engaging in any public activities within the state.
"As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, it is the governor's constitutional duty to protect the lives and property of all residents and visitors.
"This responsibility encompasses ensuring that appropriate security measures are established during significant visits or events that may draw large crowds or media scrutiny.
"When such protocols are disregarded, it poses serious security risks, not only for the visitor but also for citizens who may be exposed to avoidable threats.
Governor Okpebholo is not Peter Obi, who, during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State, detained Nasir El-Rufai upon his visit.
Furthermore, the concerns raised by the governor should not be manipulated for political gain by those aiming to achieve trivial advantages.
The state government will not remain passive while politically motivated actions threaten lives.
We anticipate that leaders, regardless of their status, will adhere to the protocols and security conditions of the regions they visit.
Earlier on Sunday, Falana urged Okpebholo to retract the threats made against Obi's life.
In a statement, the prominent lawyer pointed out that the threat against Obi issued by the "new sheriff in town" in Edo State represents a breach of Section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, as well as Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples (Ratification and Enforcement), which safeguards the fundamental right to life for every citizen.
He stated;
"However, should Governor Okpebholo fail to rescind the unlawful threat due to sheer arrogance of power, Mr. Peter Obi ought to file a petition in the Benin Judicial Division of the Federal High Court to ensure the protection of his fundamental right to life.
Mr. Obi must act with the utmost urgency considering the widespread occurrence of mob justice and other forms of extrajudicial killings in the nation.
Datti Baba-Ahmed, Obi's Running Mate, Acknowledges the Legitimacy of the Labour Party Led by Abure.
The Labour Party's vice-presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has expressed his alignment with the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and has also committed to reconciling all aggrieved party leaders to ensure the party's continued success, as evidenced in the 2023 presidential election.
He characterized the Labour Party (LP) as a historic movement that must be preserved.
Datti made these remarks during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Julius Abure-led LP in Abuja.
"The Labour Party is not a party to abandon," he asserted.
"The achievements and history that the Labour Party of Nigeria has amassed are distinctive and unparalleled."
Datti, who ran alongside Obi in the 2023 election, reminded party leaders of the strength they exhibited at the polls.
"We provided clear records and evidence of 10 million votes obtained in the last election, which was subsequently reduced to 6.1 million votes," he stated, expressing concern over what he termed as "the act of state capture," which he attributed to internal divisions within the LP and other parties.
Datti committed to facilitating reconciliation discussions between Obi and dissatisfied stakeholders.
"I am here as a mediator to reconcile differing viewpoints," he declared.
This development occurs amidst efforts by the opposition to consolidate under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to achieve electoral success in 2027. Datti acknowledged his attendance at one of the coalition meetings but emphasized that his allegiance remains with the LP.
"I am proud to state that I did participate in meetings regarding a potential coalition in Nigeria," he remarked.
"From a moral standpoint, if your community invites you to discuss security, you should attend. However, if you find that other topics are being discussed, you are free to revert to your previous stance. I have attended and listened to the coalition discussions, yet I remain committed to the Labour Party. I do not blindly enter into any political arrangements."
Datti cautioned LP members against being swayed by alliances that could jeopardize the party's integrity.
"I must express that previously, a coalition was formed which resulted in the ousting of a Nigerian government," he remarked.
"I take pleasure in noting that this is precisely what we, as the Labour Party, accomplished in 2023 and what we are poised to replicate in 2027. Nevertheless, the subsequent government is of even greater significance than the act of removing the existing one. A government was ousted, and what ensued was a catastrophe."
Regarding the leadership crisis within the party, he affirmed the legitimacy of the Abure-led faction while stating that "INEC currently acknowledges the leadership of Abure."
Paul Pogba Forecasts the Winner of the 2025 Ballon d'Or
Monaco midfielder Paul Pogba has selected Ousmane Dembele of Paris Saint-Germain as his choice for the 2025 Ballon d'Or.
During a live session with American streamer iShowSpeed, Pogba conveyed his admiration for Dembele's recent performances, particularly in PSG's remarkable UEFA Champions League-winning campaign.
"I support Dembouz [Dembele] 100 percent; he won the UCL and was essential this season," Pogba stated. "If he does not win it this year, he will never win it. Hakimi and Vitinha were impressive as well. Dembélé is the frontrunner for the Ballon d'Or."
At 28, Dembele has had an outstanding season with the Ligue 1 champions, regaining his top form and playing a crucial role in PSG's historic European triumph.
His skill, speed, and playmaking prowess were instrumental as PSG finally secured the coveted Champions League trophy, a significant factor that may influence the Ballon d'Or voting in his favor.
Pogba, who has been a long-time teammate of Dembele on the French national team, also recognized the contributions of two other PSG stars, Achraf Hakimi and Vitinha, describing their performances as "great" throughout the season. However, he emphasized that they did not surpass Dembele's impact.
"If he does not win it this year, he will never win it. Hakimi and Vitinha were impressive as well. Dembélé is the frontrunner for the Ballon d'Or," Pogba reiterated.
The 2025 Ballon d'Or ceremony is scheduled for September at the renowned Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, and the competition for the prestigious award is intensifying.
With contenders like Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappé also in the mix, Dembele's Champions League exploits could provide him with a crucial advantage.
Abure Exhorts Members to Re-join the Labour Party After Interacting with Other Parties.
The faction of the Labour Party led by Julius Abure has reached out to members who are engaging with other political parties, encouraging them to return to the party.
Abure, who serves as the National Chairman of the party, shared this information while addressing journalists regarding the results of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday.
He stated that the party welcomes those who wish to return, as long as they recognize their previous actions.
Abure clarified that while every Nigerian has the right to associate with any group or political party of their choosing, the party's constitution is unequivocal.
"The party's constitution is very explicit, and the constitution of Nigeria is also clear that one cannot belong to two political parties simultaneously.
"We are observing members who are engaging with other parties, and at the appropriate time, the party's governing bodies will determine the course of action.
"Thus, we are taking this opportunity to announce that our doors remain open. They should put aside their differences and return to the party.
"If they choose to return and offer an apology, we are willing to forgive them because we believe that there are no winners and no losers," he stated.
Badenoch's Claim of Nigerian Citizenship for her Children is Refuted by a Nigerian Immigration Lawyer.
In contrast to the recent assertion made by Kemi Badenoch, the Leader of the British Opposition and Conservative Party, regarding her children’s inability to obtain Nigerian citizenship due to her marriage to a British man, esteemed Nigerian immigration lawyer Prince Ebere Nwokoro has refuted these claims.
In a statement issued in response to this matter, Prince Nwokoro, who serves as the 1st Vice President of the Nigerian Immigration Lawyers Association (NILA), emphasized that the statement does not accurately represent the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution concerning citizenship.
He stated, "Nigeria’s nationality law is founded on the principle of jus sanguinis, which permits citizenship to be inherited through descent.
"The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended) explicitly states that an individual born to a Nigerian parent—irrespective of their birthplace—may qualify for Nigerian citizenship. In particular, Section 25(1) of the Constitution delineates the criteria for citizenship by birth, while Section 26(1) pertains to citizenship by registration."
The NILA 1st Vice President further contended that, "Considering that Kemi Badenoch is a Nigerian citizen by birth, pursuant to Section 25(1)(c) of the Constitution, her children are entitled to Nigerian citizenship under the stipulations of Section 25(1)(c) and/or Section 26(1)(b), whether through parental descent or grandparental lineage.
"These provisions guarantee that: a) children born to Nigerian citizens—regardless of whether the mother or father is Nigerian—can obtain citizenship, irrespective of their birthplace or the citizenship status of the other parent; and b) any individual of full age and capacity born outside Nigeria, whose grandparents are Nigerian citizens, may register as a citizen of Nigeria.
He highlighted that as a prominent figure, Ms. Badenoch should recognize the importance of precision and clarity in public discussions regarding significant issues such as citizenship.
The esteemed legal expert remarked that misrepresentation of facts in this context may result in misunderstandings and a flawed public perception of our citizenship laws.
Consequently, he urged public figures to be meticulous in their portrayal of the law to prevent the continuation of misleading narratives that could significantly impact Nigeria’s legal system and national identity.
In light of this, Prince Nwokoro called upon everyone to dismiss Kemi’s claim as ‘contra legem’ since it does not accurately represent Nigeria’s citizenship framework.
Atalanta's Retegui Joins Saudi Club Al-Qadsiah
Last season's Serie A leading goal-scorer, Mateo Retegui, has transferred to Al-Qadsiah from Atalanta, as announced by the Saudi club on Monday.
Italian media reports indicate that Al-Qadsiah has paid over 60 million euros ($70 million) for the Italian forward, although the duration of his contract remains undisclosed.
The 26-year-old netted 25 goals in the league last season after joining Atalanta in 2024.
"El Matador. Al Qadsiah's new powerhouse," the club stated on social media.
Retegui, who was born in Argentina, takes the place of former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is said to have agreed to a return to Marseille.
Babangida's Son Explains and Clears the Air About President Tinubu's Appointment.
On Monday, July 21, a letter circulated widely, alleging that Mohammed Babangida, the son of former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), had declined his appointment as Chairman of the restructured Bank of Agriculture by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
However, Babangida, through his media office in Minna, has refuted the claims made in that letter, labeling it as fraudulent.
According to one of Babangida’s media representatives, Alhaji Mahmud Abdullahi;
"Mohammed Babangida did not turn down the appointment. The letter that is being circulated is false. In fact, the signature does not belong to Mohammed Babangida, and the phone numbers provided are not his.
"We would like to clarify that Mohammed has graciously accepted the position of Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture as announced by the federal government and extends his heartfelt gratitude to President Tinubu for the trust and confidence placed in him.
"Furthermore, we want to assure the public that those who are disseminating these untruths will be thoroughly investigated and held accountable. We remain dedicated to transparency, accountability, and promoting unity within our nation.
The Moment Senator Natasha Dared to Enter NASS After Her Convoy Was Turned Away.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents the Kogi Central senatorial district, appeared at the National Assembly premises on Tuesday.
Arriving in a black SUV, accompanied by several vehicles and her supporters, including Aisha Yesufu, she successfully passed the first security check but was halted at the second gate.
Undeterred, she exited her vehicle and proceeded into the assembly premises.
Supporters marching alongside the convoy were heard chanting in pidgin, "Na our Senator be this o, we no get another one," to which others responded, "Na our senator be this eh!"
It is important to note that the Senate had previously warned her to refrain from forcefully resuming her legislative duties until her suspension period concludes.
This warning came after the lawmaker expressed her intention to return to the Senate on Tuesday, following a judgment from Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, stated that no court had mandated the Senate to reinstate the controversial lawmaker.
He remarked, "The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to reaffirm, for the third time, that there is no existing court order requiring the Senate to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan prior to the end of her suspension.
"The Senate had previously issued two public statements following the court ruling and the release of the Certified True Copy of the Enrolled Order, clarifying that no positive or mandatory directive was given to the Senate regarding her recall.
"Instead, the Honourable Court provided a non-binding advisory suggesting that the Senate consider amending its Standing Orders and reviewing the suspension, which it deemed potentially excessive.
The Court, however, clearly stated that the Senate did not violate any laws or constitutional provisions when it imposed the disciplinary action due to the Senator’s misconduct during plenary.
He pointed out that the same court found Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt and imposed sanctions, which included a ₦5m fine payable to the Federal Government and a requirement for her to issue an apology in two national newspapers and on her Facebook page, a directive that has reportedly not been followed.
"It is thus astonishing and legally indefensible that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, while appealing and having submitted a motion for a stay against the valid and enforceable orders issued against her, is attempting to act on a fictitious order of recall that does not exist," he stated.
At the Math Olympiad, Humans Defeat AI.
Humans outperformed generative AI models developed by Google and OpenAI at a prestigious international mathematics competition, even though the programs achieved gold-level scores for the first time.
Neither AI model attained full marks — in contrast to five individuals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), a renowned annual event for participants under the age of 20.
On Monday, Google announced that an enhanced version of its Gemini chatbot successfully solved five out of the six mathematics problems presented at the IMO, which took place this month in Queensland, Australia.
"We can confirm that Google DeepMind has reached the highly sought-after milestone, securing 35 out of a possible 42 points — a score worthy of a gold medal," the US technology giant quoted IMO president Gregor Dolinar as stating.
"Their solutions were remarkable in numerous ways. IMO evaluators found them to be clear, precise, and mostly straightforward to follow."
Approximately 10 percent of human participants earned gold-level medals, with five achieving perfect scores of 42 points.
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, reported that its experimental reasoning model attained a gold-level score of 35 points on the examination.
The outcome "fulfilled a long-standing grand challenge in AI" at "the world’s most esteemed math competition," OpenAI researcher Alexander Wei shared on social media.
"We assessed our models on the 2025 IMO problems under the same conditions as human participants," he explained.
"For each problem, three former IMO medalists independently evaluated the proofs submitted by the model."
Last year, Google secured a silver-medal score at the IMO held in Bath, UK, solving four out of the six problems.
This process required two to three days of computation — significantly longer than this year, when its Gemini model completed the problems within the 4.5-hour time limit, as stated by the company.
The IMO indicated that technology firms had "privately tested closed-source AI models on this year’s problems," which were also faced by 641 competing students from 112 nations.
"It is incredibly exciting to witness advancements in the mathematical abilities of AI models," said.
The contest organizers were unable to ascertain the extent of computing power utilized by the AI models or determine if there was any human participation, he warned.
WAFCON 2024: Okafor and Plumptre are Cleared to Play South Africa.
Super Falcons head coach, Justine Madugu, has shared an encouraging update regarding the injuries of Ashleigh Plumptre and Chioma Okafor.
Plumptre was absent from training on Sunday, leading to concerns that she might not participate in Nigeria’s crucial semi-final match against Banyana Banyana from South Africa.
The defender has represented Nigeria three times in the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Morocco.
In contrast, Okafor has yet to make her debut for the nine-time champions in this tournament.
Madugu confirmed that both players are fit for selection.
“There are no concerns regarding Ashleigh; it is merely a precautionary measure. There are no issues or problems whatsoever. As for Okafor, we will evaluate her condition and determine how we might provide her with an opportunity if necessary,” Madugu stated during a press conference.
2027: Isah Baka, the Former Head of the Niger LG, Leaves the PDP for the ADC
Isah Saidu Baka, a former Chairman of the Lapai Local Government Area in Niger State, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
His resignation, dated July 22, 2025, was directed to both the PDP Chairman of Muye/Egba Ward and the Niger State Chairman of the party. Baka cited personal and political beliefs as the motivation for his departure from the party with which he has been affiliated for a long time.
"After thorough contemplation and extensive discussions with my family, political associates, and constituents, I have decided to separate from the PDP. This choice stems from my aspiration to pursue new political avenues that resonate more closely with my vision and the aspirations of my community," he stated.
He reportedly led the administration of the Lapai Local Government from 2011 to 2014 and ran for the Agaie/Lapai Federal Constituency seat in the 2023 general elections under the PDP banner.
The former House of Representatives candidate expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities it afforded him throughout his political career.
"I am grateful for the experiences, development, and connections I have formed within the PDP. I wish the party success in its future endeavors," he remarked.
In pledging his support to the African Democratic Congress, Baka characterized the ADC as a party that reflects his revitalized political principles and dedication to grassroots advancement.
His defection contributes to a series of recent notable departures from the PDP in Niger State, indicating a possible transformation of the political landscape in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.

"The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin."
It is important to note that former President Muhammadu Buhari was hospitalized multiple times in London during his time as Nigeria’s leader.
During his presidency from 2015 to 2023, he made at least 13 documented medical trips to the United Kingdom (UK).
In February 2016, he traveled to the UK for a "medical vacation" lasting approximately six days.
Additionally, from June 6 to June 19, 2016, Buhari sought treatment in London for a persistent ear infection, which resulted in the cancellation of a two-day working visit to Lagos state.
In 2017, President Buhari spent several months in the UK receiving medical care, which sparked widespread speculation regarding his health and even rumors of his demise.
By late 2017 and into 2018, a viral conspiracy theory began circulating, particularly on social media, alleging that Buhari had died and been replaced by a lookalike from Sudan named Jibril.
From January 19 to March 10, 2018, the former Nigerian leader extended his trip to London for approximately 50 to 51 days.
He reportedly underwent a blood transfusion and informed Nigerians, "I’ve never been so sick in my life."
From May 7 to August 19, Buhari undertook his longest medical trip—104 days in London—with limited official updates that fueled speculation regarding his death.
Furthermore, from August 3 to August 18, 2018, Buhari took an additional 16-day working/medical leave in the UK.
Fast forward to April 25–May 5, 2019, the former President undertook a 10-day private trip to the UK.
Between November 2–17, 2019, he had another 15-day private stay in London.
Following the pandemic lockdown, former President Muhammadu Buhari resumed his health trips from March 30 to mid-April 2021.
From June to August 2021, he extended his trip to the UK while also attending an education summit.
In March and October 2022, Buhari made two undisclosed trips to London for check-ups.
In May 2025, the former President undertook his last known medical 'routine check-up' in London, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He sent a letter to the delegation in Lagos through President Bola Tinubu, extending his best wishes to the African leaders.

Paul Ibe, Atiku's Assistant, Says Delegates Will Choose the ADC Coalition's Presidential Candidate.
Delegates will determine the presidential ticket of the ADC coalition – Paul Ibe, aide to Atiku
Paul Ibe, the media representative for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has revealed who will influence the outcome for those vying for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
Ibe stated that delegates will play a crucial role in deciding the prospects of Atiku, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, who are anticipated to compete for the ADC's presidential nomination.
In an interview with Trust TV, Ibe mentioned that the leaders have already come to an agreement on the necessity of making sacrifices prior to the coalition's establishment.
Following the introduction of ADC as the coalition's platform, Atiku, Obi, and Amaechi expressed their intentions to pursue the presidency under the party's banner.
Nonetheless, Ibe emphasized that the competition will adhere to democratic principles.
He remarked: "The delegates of the party, whether through a direct or indirect primary, are the ones who will ultimately decide the fate of these leaders.
"The disputes among these candidates will be resolved by the delegates.
"Perhaps this situation arises from the fact that we have strayed from the true essence of democracy due to the actions of Tinubu and his administration.
"Everyone is being pushed towards a one-party system. It is about choice; people have the right to make their own decisions.

In the 2025 Club World Cup Final, PSG Humiliates Kylian Mbappe's Real Madrid, and will Play Chelsea.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) delivered a stunning performance against Real Madrid, achieving a humiliating 4-0 victory on Wednesday night, thereby securing their spot in the final of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
The semi-finals of the Club World Cup, held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 9, featured former PSG star Kylian Mbappé facing his old team for the first time since his transfer to Madrid last summer.
However, what many had expected to be a celebratory evening for the Frenchman quickly turned into a humbling experience.
From the very beginning, PSG displayed their ruthlessness. Within just six minutes, Fabian Ruiz struck first, capitalizing on a loose ball in the penalty area to give the Parisians an early lead.
This initial goal unsettled Madrid’s defense, and merely three minutes later, Ousmane Dembélé extended the lead to two. Taking advantage of a mistake by Antonio Rüdiger, Dembélé coolly slotted the ball past Courtois.
Luis Enrique’s squad pressed aggressively, stifling Madrid’s buildup play and moving the ball at a pace that the Spaniards struggled to keep up with. Jude Bellingham and Mbappé had brief moments of creativity, but they were effectively neutralized by a well-organized PSG midfield and defense.
Ruiz netted his second goal in the 24th minute, finishing a quick one-two with Achraf Hakimi to put the French champions three goals ahead before the half-hour mark.
Madrid was unable to recover from this setback. Even as coach Carlo Ancelotti made substitutions, bringing on Luka Modrić, Éder Militão, and Brahim Díaz in the second half, PSG maintained their tactical and psychological dominance.
Gonçalo Ramos capped off the rout with a well-executed finish in the 87th minute following a rapid counterattack, ensuring a scoreline that was as brutal as it was justified.
For Mbappé, this was a night to forget. He was met with boos from PSG fans with every touch, and although he displayed glimpses of his renowned speed, he was largely kept in check by his former teammates.

ADC: Ogaji Says Former Senate President Mark Will Lead the Coalition to Victory.
A Senatorial candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 elections, Hon. Chief Bright Igodo Ogaji, has stated that the selection of former Senate President, Senator David Mark, as the Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), will drive the party towards success in the 2027 elections.
Ogaji also expressed his support for the newly established leadership of the party in Benue State, characterizing it as a new beginning for both the state and Nigeria as a whole.
It is noteworthy that the ADC was officially inaugurated last week in Abuja by prominent opposition figures in Nigeria, along with representatives from the ruling All Progressives Congress. Senator Mark was appointed as Interim National Chairman, while former Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, was named Interim National Secretary.
The party was subsequently launched in Benue State on Wednesday, taking over the Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). During this event, former Speaker pro tempore of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Terngu Tsegba, and former Member representing Obi/Oju Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Samson Okwu, were appointed as Interim Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
In response, Chief Ogaji, in a statement he personally signed, conveyed his strong confidence in the ADC's leadership at both the Benue and National levels, encouraging his supporters to register with the party as a new vehicle that would lead the people to their promised future.
The former Chairman of Oju Local Government Council in Benue State, whose numerous supporters made a significant presence at the event, praised the exceptional leadership qualities of Senator Mark throughout the years, referring to him as a transformative figure who has emerged from challenges to liberate Nigeria from the grips of oppression and underdevelopment.
He remarked, "The new face of ADC (Senator Mark) is undoubtedly a transformative leader who has navigated through adversity to free Nigeria from the chains of oppression and underdevelopment, and to guide Benue and Nigeria towards a path of inclusive development, prosperity, and national pride.
The rise of his leadership alongside that of the Benue leadership has ushered in a revitalized Nigeria poised for development.
"I call upon all my supporters, both domestically and internationally, to rally behind these esteemed leaders of our region, to ensure the success of the new party for the benefit of the Benue people and all Nigerians," stated Ogaji.
ADC, Mark, Ogaji,
Dr. Nto Informs the Government that University and Institute Research Findings on Agriculture Have Been Abandoned.
Research findings related to agriculture from universities and institutes have been overlooked, according to Dr. Nto's statement to the government.
Dr. Philips Nto, an agricultural expert and university educator, has urged government officials at all levels to start utilizing agricultural research findings as a strategy to enhance food security.
During a visit from his former classmates from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Dr. Nto, who serves as the Director of the Agribusiness Incubation Centre (ABIC) at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, expressed his disappointment that research findings from various institutes and universities are left unattended in libraries, receiving no attention from the government.
He called on the government not only to utilize these research findings but also to honor the researchers, similar to practices in more developed nations.
"Developed countries such as the United States, China, and those in Europe recognize and celebrate groundbreaking research achievements in agriculture rather than merely focusing on infrastructure like roads," he remarked.
The former Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning in Abia State lamented the apparent disconnect between research institutions and the government, indicating a lack of support for researchers from governmental bodies.
He noted that the majority of research results and findings in Nigeria are not leveraged by the government for societal advancement, and as the Director of ABIC MOUAU, he expressed regret that numerous improved crop and livestock varieties remain neglected in research institutions. He encouraged his visitors to advocate for government engagement with agricultural research findings.
Dr. Nto, who previously held the position of Provost at Abia State College of Education, Technical, Arochukwu, informed his guests that the MOAU ABIC has been actively involving farmers in its surrounding areas by introducing innovative farming methods to achieve better yields.
Previously, the head of the delegation, Dr. Charles Osita from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, praised Dr. Nto for his dedication and hard work in improving food security in Nigeria via the centre.
He expressed his satisfaction that Dr. Philips Nto was utilizing the centre to transform agricultural practices in this region of the country and referred to him as an exemplary representative of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Politicians in the Opposition Coalition are Cautioned by Akpabio not to Join Two Parties.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has cautioned politicians against being members of more than one political party, a statement perceived by many as a subtle critique aimed at the opposition coalition members, particularly the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Akpabio made this assertion while addressing a National Assembly session, emphasizing that it is inappropriate for an individual to profess membership in one party while simultaneously engaging in the activities of another party.
"You cannot claim to be a member of the ADC while still identifying as a member of the Labour Party. It is not permissible to belong to two political parties. Only one party will participate in the election," Akpabio remarked.
Akpabio’s comments are interpreted as a reminder to Obi and others present at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) summit, highlighting his insistence on being a member of the LP, which many view as contradictory, leading to speculation regarding Obi’s political future.
The Senate President, who held the position of Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015, stated that while the APC is open to welcoming defectors, the vitality of the nation’s democracy relies on a robust opposition.
Akpabio also took the opportunity to commend the current House of Representatives for maintaining relative peace in comparison to previous legislative sessions, some of which were characterized by physical altercations.
Atiku and ADC "window shoppers": Jacob Mark, a Former PDP Legal Adviser Stated
Jacob Mark, a previous legal advisor to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has characterized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other PDP members who are now aligning with the coalition-supported African Democratic Congress (ADC) as mere 'window shoppers' who, in his opinion, should not be regarded seriously.
During an appearance on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Thursday, Mark criticized Atiku for what he termed a pattern of political inconsistency, accusing him of frequently changing parties in his quest for a presidential nomination.
He stated that he would not consider Atiku a serious candidate until he officially resigns from the PDP and formally joins the ADC.
"Anyone who has not resigned from his political party and is moving around, being in SDP today, in ADA tomorrow, and now in ADC, should not be taken seriously," Mark remarked.
When directly asked if Atiku fits that description, Mark responded, "Until he resigns from the PDP, I will not take him seriously."
He further contended that it is unconstitutional for Atiku to seek presidential nominations from both the PDP and ADC simultaneously.
"You cannot be seeking a presidential ticket in ADC while also pursuing one in PDP at the same time. That is not permissible by law. You cannot be involved with two different political parties; you must belong to one," the former legal advisor to the PDP asserted.
Citing Atiku’s history of party changes, Mark accused the former Vice President of establishing a precedent for political recklessness within the PDP.
He stated, "This has been occurring since around 2009, particularly in 2011, when Atiku Abubakar, along with five other governors, exited the PDP convention and formed an alliance with the opposition party at that time.
"They engaged in political maneuvering, lost the election, and then returned to the PDP without facing any consequences.
"This represents the core of political misconduct that has gone unpunished. Individuals enter and exit at will; you may go wherever you please, return, and obtain a presidential nomination, and if it no longer aligns with your interests, you simply depart. If you venture there and face defeat, you can return once more and will be welcomed back into the party without facing any repercussions."
Mark concluded by emphasizing that such conduct has exacerbated the issue of anti-party activities that persistently afflict the former ruling party.

Peter Obi: "A President Should be Able to Die for His People."
The president must be willing to sacrifice for his citizens – Peter Obi
Presidential candidate Peter Obi has asserted that the role of the Nigerian president requires empathy and selflessness, rather than aloofness or opulence.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi criticized the current government led by President Bola Tinubu, claiming it shows a lack of compassion for the hardships faced by everyday Nigerians.
"If I am elected president, I will ensure resources are utilized efficiently. I cannot advocate for the purchase of a new jet," Obi remarked, denouncing the use of public funds for luxury items while critical services are inadequately funded.
"I have no need for a jet, as I can travel anywhere without one. I will not allocate N150 billion to acquire a jet when 80 percent of primary healthcare facilities are non-operational."
Reflecting on his tenure as governor of Anambra State, Obi mentioned that he lived a simple life and set an example for others.
"As a governor, during my initial four years, I drove a 406. For the remainder of my term, I did not use armored vehicles. No one will attempt to harm you if you act rightly. It is only when you engage in wrongdoing that you fear for your life.
"If your citizens are suffering, you must be prepared to make sacrifices. The president should also be prepared to make such sacrifices," he stated.

How Otti Was Able to get Three Inmates on De@th Row Released From Kirikiri Prison After 26 Years
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has successfully facilitated the release of three individuals who had been incarcerated in Kirikiri prison for 26 years after receiving death sentences for allegedly stealing a generator set in 1999.
The individuals released include Mr. Ogbonnaya Igbojionu, Olawale Adediji, and another person whose identity has not been disclosed.
As per the press release from the Chief Press Secretary to the Abia State Governor, Igbojionu and Adediji were introduced to Governor Otti on Saturday, July 5, 2025, by Hon. Simon Oshi from Enugu State.
Hon. Oshi reportedly contacted Governor Otti for intervention after learning about the inmates through a social media post by influencer Olumide Ogunsanwo, known in the social media realm as “Sea King,” prompting Governor Otti to take swift action.
The social media influencer had been detained in the Kirikiri correctional facility for two weeks for an unrelated matter when the situation was uncovered.
In his account, Hon. Oshi stated;
“When the well-known social media influencer raised the issue online, I felt compelled to verify the claims. Thus, I assembled a team of lawyers and accompanied our noted influencer to visit the two young men in Kirikiri prison. Upon arrival, I began conversing with them.
I inquired about their origins, and one responded that he was from Abia State. I mentioned that I was familiar with their Governor, describing him as a commendable and exceptional leader. I assured them that I would relay their message to him and follow up with them. They had been sentenced to death in 2003 concerning a case involving a stolen electricity generator purchased in 1999. Consequently, I informed His Excellency, and the following day, he dispatched the Attorney General of Abia State to Kirikiri prison in Lagos to confirm the veracity of my statements.
"The Attorney General visited the location and subsequently reported back to him. His Excellency, demonstrating exemplary leadership and being a remarkable father figure to us all, promptly composed a letter addressed to the Governor of the State where they were detained. From that point onward, he persistently advocated for their release, and after enduring 26 years of imprisonment, His Excellency successfully facilitated their return, allowing them to experience freedom once more.
Reflecting on his harrowing experience, Igbojionu, a native of Ikwuano LGA in Abia State, recounted his previous occupation as a dealer in electric generating sets in Lagos State. His troubles began in 1999 when he purchased a generator from one Segun Ajibade and subsequently sold it to another individual. Merely two weeks following that sale, Ajibade returned to his shop accompanied by several police officers.
He recounted that, in what seemed to be a premeditated scheme, they assaulted him and coerced him into signing a statement they had prepared, all while denying him the opportunity to review its contents. He was then taken to court and handed a death sentence. From 1999, he remained incarcerated until 2003 when he was officially sentenced to death, until the intervention occurred in 2025.
Upon the release of the ex-inmates Ogbonnaya Igbojionu, Olawale Adediji, and another individual who was unable to accompany them back to Abia State, Governor Alex Otti expressed his gratitude to Hon. Simon Oshi for his unwavering determination and commitment, urging him to persist in his societal contributions. Governor Otti also commended the social media influencer for his commendable efforts, suggesting that perhaps God permitted him to be detained in the correctional facility for two weeks solely to assist Mr. Igbojionu and others in reclaiming their freedom from death sentences and life imprisonment."
In the governor's own words;
"A typical Nigerian might say it does not concern me, but due to your commendable character, you took it upon yourself. Had you not brought it to my attention, I would have remained unaware." Therefore, upon our inquiry, we discovered that although they were in Lagos, the matter pertained to Ogun State. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my brother, Governor, colleague, and friend, Dapo Abiodun, for his diligence and consistency in this matter." When I initially informed him and sent the letter, he acknowledged it and assured me he would take action. Just last week, while I was abroad, he called to inform me that they have now been released." For us, justice is paramount. One may possess immense wealth, but if one does not contribute to the establishment of a fair and just society, such wealth is rendered meaningless." We will all eventually depart. Individuals leave behind so much.
Once you close your eyes and do not reopen them, that is the conclusion. That marks the end. Whatever you have amassed and acquired will become inconsequential."
Governor Otti assured that his administration would provide the necessary support for them to reintegrate into society, instructing the Commissioner for Local Government and his counterpart in Power and Public Utilities, who were present at the event, to collaborate with the relevant government departments to facilitate their reintegration.
"While it may not be their direct responsibility, I am assigning them the task of working with the pertinent sectors of the government to ensure their successful reintegration into society. We will assist you and help you return to the community. With that said, I would like to extend a warm welcome back to this region. We are grateful for your preservation up to this moment," the governor concluded.
Mr. Ogbonnaya Igbojionu, speaking on behalf of the other freed inmates, expressed gratitude to Almighty God for using Governor Otti to spare their lives and thanked Governor Otti for being a compassionate and dedicated leader.

The ASOPADEC Boss Informs RAMFC, "We Need More Funds."
We require additional funding – ASOPADEC Chief informs RAMFC
The General Manager of the Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ASOPADEC), Ven. (Dr.) Joshua Onyeike, states that an increase in the oil derivation fund allocated to the agency will facilitate a more effective approach to addressing the unique challenges and developmental requirements of the oil-producing communities.
During a meeting with a delegation from the Revenue Allocation Mobilization and Fiscal Commission (RAMFC), led by the Federal Commissioner representing Abia State, Mrs. Nkechi Linda Oti, in his office, Dr. Onyeike emphasized that ASOPADEC, as an interventionist agency, necessitates greater financial resources to support the transformative initiatives of Governor Alex Otti in the state.
The ASOPADEC Chief reiterated the Commission's dedication to the swift transformation of oil-producing regions in alignment with Governor Alex Otti's developmental policies, revealing plans for the rehabilitation of electricity in Asa land and the training of youth in various skills.
Expressing gratitude to Governor Otti for empowering the Commission in its intervention efforts, Venerable Onyeike outlined several accomplishments during his tenure, including the construction of civic centers, notably the impressive Asa Civic Centre, renovation and retrofitting of numerous public schools, road reconstruction, scholarship awards for underprivileged students, market stall reconstruction, borehole drilling projects, and the distribution of agricultural inputs, among others.
He characterized the visit from the Federal Commissioner and her team as significant in the history of the Commission and assured her that his Commission would utilize her esteemed position to improve the conditions of oil-producing areas and other regions of the state.
In her address, the head of the delegation and Federal Commissioner representing Abia State in the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mrs. Nkechi Linda Otti, articulated that her visit aimed to engage with pertinent stakeholders within the state government to foster collaborative efforts directed towards advancing the state.
The Federal Commissioner, while characterizing Governor Otti as a cooperative leader who has performed admirably in the administration of the state, emphasized that the Governor requires full support from her office for the greater benefit of the state.
Additionally, the Director of the State Office on Local Governments within the Commission, Mrs. Florence Oko, along with the Administrative Secretary responsible for Abia and Imo States, Mrs. Elizabeth Okafor, highlighted the importance of establishing a smooth working relationship between the office of the Abia representative in RMAFC and ASOPADEC, and lamented the diminished oil production in Abia, which they largely attributed to acts of vandalism.
Amendment to the Constitution: Mbah Advocates for the Establishment of a State and a Rotating Presidency
Constitutional amendment: Mbah advocates for the establishment of a new state and a rotational presidency.
The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has urged for the formation of an additional state in the South East, aiming to align it with the other six geopolitical zones.
Mbah also advocated for a rotational presidency and the establishment of state police to ensure that every region of the country feels included and to enhance national security.
He made these remarks on Thursday evening while hosting members of the Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment, who were visiting him at Government House, Enugu, in anticipation of the regional public hearing on constitutional amendments scheduled for the weekend at the International Conference Centre, Enugu.
"One of the most exciting proposals is the concept of state policing. We have strongly argued for the necessity of states to establish their own police services, similar to the federal police, but with clearly defined jurisdictions and operational parameters.
"We believe this is long overdue, and there could not be a more opportune moment for such a development, given the vulnerabilities present in our various communities. The introduction of state police would be a significant advancement in our Constitution.
"The South East experiences injustice. Notably, among the various geopolitical zones, the South East is the only one comprising five states. This is another issue we hope to address through this amendment process.
"Additionally, the concept of a rotational presidency is equally significant. We believe this would provide the South East and other regions an opportunity to attain the presidency.
"These are the areas we consider commendable, and we will formally present our position during the hearing tomorrow and in the days that follow," he stated.
In a recent statement, Senate Deputy Chief Whip and head of the delegation, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, indicated that the Committee was present in Enugu to gather the perspectives of the South East populace regarding the constitutional amendment process.
"It is widely acknowledged that the 1999 constitution has faced significant criticism from Nigerians, who argue that it is a remnant of military rule and fails to adequately represent the interests of all the diverse groups within Nigeria. Consequently, there is a necessity to amend the constitution periodically.
"We hope that this dialogue will provide the people of the South East with the chance to rectify some injustices stemming from the 1999 constitution, as we, the South East community, have expressed concerns about being marginalized in various aspects, especially in terms of the number of states, when compared to other geopolitical zones in Nigeria," Nwebonyi remarked. Says Mbah.
Tinubu Pays Tribute to Former Eagles Goalie Peter Rufai
President Bola Tinubu Expresses Condolences for Former Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Rufai
President Bola Tinubu remarked that Peter Rufai, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper, has etched his name in the history of Nigerian sports and the African continent.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on June 3, 2025, the President honored the football legend, affectionately known to fans as "Dodomayana".
The football icon passed away on Thursday at the age of 61.
"I remember with great fondness the valiant contributions of Peter Rufai during the Super Eagles' historic triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, where he served as the first-choice goalkeeper," President Tinubu stated.
"He subsequently contributed to Nigeria's groundbreaking first appearance at the FIFA World Cup, known as USA '94."
Tinubu emphasized that the late athlete's legacy would endure in the hearts of Nigerians and football enthusiasts around the globe.
The President also acknowledged Rufai's participation in the 1998 World Cup in France and recognized his pioneering efforts in professionalizing Nigerian football, having played in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
"Beginning his career with Stationery Stores of Lagos in 1980, Rufai was among the first Nigerian footballers to turn professional, competing in various European leagues… thereby bringing honor to the nation and creating new opportunities for aspiring footballers in Nigeria," he remarked.
In addition to his sporting accomplishments, Rufai, a member of the royal family in Idimu, Lagos, was praised for his commitment to mentoring future generations through his Staruf Football Academy. "He consistently inspired, guided, and developed young football talents," President Tinubu noted.
The President extended his prayers for the peace of Rufai's soul and offered comfort to his family and all those in mourning.
Tributes have been flowing in from various sectors of the football and political communities. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar referred to Rufai's death as a "significant loss."
"Peter Rufai’s extraordinary contributions to the beautiful game will forever be cherished, and his absence will be profoundly felt," stated Atiku.
Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa also expressed his heartfelt sentiments: "I can hardly believe I am writing this – a post to say goodbye to a true giant of Nigerian football, Peter Rufai. Your heroic reflexes and steadfast presence in goal provided us with moments of pride on the international stage."
"Although you have departed, your legacy ascends higher than any trophy. Soar high, DODOMAYANA — the nation grieves for a hero. My condolences to your family, friends, teammates, and supporters. Rest in peace, legend."
Rufai, who earned 65 caps for the national team, made history in 1993 by scoring for the Super Eagles during a 6–0 victory over Ethiopia. His swift reflexes and acrobatic saves earned him the moniker "Dodomayana".
Until his untimely passing, he was also recognized for his dedication to education, having enrolled at the National Institute for Sports in Lagos to obtain formal coaching qualifications.
His death, which was announced on the same day as the tragic passing of Liverpool star Diogo Jota in a car accident, marked a somber moment in the global football community.
Coalition: You are Causing Nigerians to Become Dissatisfied. Wike to Amaechi, Atiku, and Others
Coalition: You are stirring unrest among Nigerians – Wike to Atiku, Amaechi, and others
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has accused members of the opposition coalition of stirring unrest among Nigerians.
He stated that no amount of "coalition politics" or propaganda can diminish the evident achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
While speaking at the inauguration of the newly rehabilitated Aguma Palace–Radio Nigeria–New Market Road in the Gwagwalada Area Council on Friday, Wike ridiculed opposition figures who, as he noted, are distressed by the swift transformation occurring in the FCT under Tinubu’s governance.
The minister remarked, “Mr. President, today marks the 16th day that you have dedicated your time to personally engage in commissioning ceremonies. I was unaware that people were so troubled by the numerous positive developments in the FCT until last night when I observed one of the presidential aspirants from the coalition party, who was an industrialist, visibly upset that the President, the Vice President, the Senate President, the Speaker, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation are all attending project commissioning events. Yet they claim the populace is dissatisfied!”
The minister criticized opposition figures for what he termed “fake coalitions” created to divert Nigerians' attention from the administration’s initiatives.
“I never inquired, but they mentioned that the coalition began 18 months ago. Mr. President has been in office for two years. So, you initiated the coalition when he had been in office for just six months! When will you cease misleading Nigerians?”
He urged former leaders to demonstrate their legacies instead of hiding behind hollow rhetoric.
“Someone assumed office six months ago, and you claim Nigerians are angry. However, you served as Senate President for eight years, Speaker for four years, and Minister of Transportation for eight years. Yet, you never succeeded in making angry Nigerians content, but now you wish to return to power. You will not return,” Wike asserted.
The minister emphasized that leaders are required to justify the opportunities they have had to serve the populace.
"During my tenure as Senate President, allow me to present my achievements. How did I assist the citizens of Benue State? Was it by taking a helicopter to Otukpo? We are here for 16 days, presenting our achievements."
He reflected on his own political struggles, reminding the audience of his history of overcoming influential godfathers and 'super ministers'.
Wike stated, "In 2015, I triumphed over a very influential governor who intended for his associate to become governor. In 2019, a super minister who was borrowing funds extensively, left us in significant debt, and I defeated him. In 2023, it was the same scenario. They claimed they would support an individual whose sole role was to switch parties. Now in 2025, they are forming another coalition. Were you born into a coalition?"
Regarding the Gwagwalada project, Wike mentioned that the road, like others under Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, was selected by the community itself.
"One positive aspect of these projects in rural areas is that we never convened in the city and dictated, 'Go and construct this road.' We came here, and the community expressed, 'This is what we desire.' That exemplifies community involvement in governance," he remarked.
He praised local contractors, highlighting that the administration is intentional about empowering Nigerians through infrastructure development.
"The Ushafa–War College Road in Bwari was completed by local contractors. The bus terminals were constructed by local contractors. This is the guiding principle of this government: to empower our own citizens."
Wike challenged those urging Nigerians to revolt to take the lead in their home states.
He remarked, "Some individuals are calling for Nigerians to rise up and revolt. To the person making this call, I urge you to lead it. Begin in Rivers State, rather than having your children in London while you send other people's children to the streets. Return, bring your children, and confront us first!"
He assured the citizens that the FCT Administration will persist in listening, delivering, and enhancing rural roads and social infrastructure.
"Are you content? Do you desire additional possessions? We shall provide you with anything you wish. Mr. President, we take pride in your ability to alter the narrative. Let those who choose not to embrace happiness remain in their unhappiness indefinitely. As for myself, I am perpetually joyful!" Amaechi, Atiku, Coalition, Wike.
If Peter Obi Becomes the Coalition's Nominee, I Will Back Him, Says Lamido
Sule Lamido, the former Governor of Jigawa State and a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has indicated his readiness to support Mr. Peter Obi in the upcoming 2027 Presidential election, provided he becomes the coalition's candidate.
Similarly, the Middle Belt Forum has stated that they may have no alternative but to align with Peter Obi, emphasizing that the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 election has a proven history of fulfilling commitments.
In response to an inquiry regarding his potential support for Obi, who has pledged to serve a single four-year term if victorious in the 2027 presidential election, Lamido remarked, “If the coalition nominates Peter Obi or any other individual dedicated to the restoration of Nigeria, I will lend my support. However, I remain a member of the PDP. We ought to have transcended tribal and regional biases.
Leadership ought to be based on competence and vision, rather than geographical considerations. What benefits has the North derived from producing the majority of presidents if the region continues to be underdeveloped? I am receptive to any arrangement that can challenge the APC and aid in the recovery of Nigeria. I will support those who share this objective.” The former governor elaborated that the zoning arrangement between the North and South was a construct of the PDP aimed at addressing a particular issue, namely the annulment of the June 12 election. He stated, “It was intended as a healing mechanism, a temporary solution to restore trust. However, it has now become a burden.”
Peter Obi has a proven history of fulfilling commitments — Middle Belt Forum, MBF
In its statement, the Middle Belt Forum, MBF, noted that due to the lack of viable options in the North, they may be compelled to support Peter Obi and his commitment to serve a single term if elected President in 2027, given his track record of honoring promises. The National President of MBF, Dr. Bitrus Pogu, asserted that the North would have no choice but to back a candidate from the South whom they can trust, as any attempt to nominate a candidate from the North may not be successful. He mentioned that they might support Peter Obi due to his commitment or former President Goodluck Jonathan, provided he is permitted, considering that the law would only allow him a single term.
Dr. Pogu stated, "I would like to express that a person who is drowning would not hesitate to grasp at a straw, believing it could save him. Therefore, in the predicament that the North currently faces, I do not believe they have many options. Finding a Northerner to run is challenging, and they must place their trust in someone with a proven history of reliability, which appears to be the case with Peter Obi.
However, the current concern is whether, despite his declaration and the possibility of obtaining a written agreement from him, they will genuinely fulfill their commitments to support. This is the crux of the matter, as some may still consider giving Atiku another chance or opting for one of the candidates from the North, yet they are aware that such choices are unlikely to be successful, and they understand this very well. Consequently, they might still lean towards a candidate from the South, whether it be someone who offers promises like Peter Obi or a figure such as former President Jonathan, if permitted, knowing that he would be limited to a single term. These are the alternatives available to them, for when individuals find themselves with limited choices, any option may seem viable.
Obi’s assertion is politically motivated — Ibrahim Nakande
Ibrahim Nakande, a former Minister of Information and Communication, remarked, "When someone claims they will serve only one term, it is a political statement. Will the constituents from his region accept that? He enjoys support across the board, even in the North, as evidenced by the results of the last election. There is no doubt he will have backing; it hinges on his proposed policies and programs, and ultimately, it is for the broader Nigerian populace to determine. I believe he is mistaken in making such a claim."
Tinubu is optimally positioned to transfer power to a northerner post-2027 — Yakasai
Elder Statesman and former Presidential Liaison Officer during the Second Republic, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, asserted that President Bola Tinubu, who is currently in office, will have only four additional years following 2027 if he is re-elected for a second term. Yakasai elaborated that President Bola Tinubu is ideally situated to transfer power to a northerner should Nigerians elect such a candidate.
He stated, "It is widely recognized that the constitution limits the President to a maximum of two terms, each lasting four years. Therefore, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is in the most favorable position to fulfill an agreement to hand over power four years after 2027, as the constitution mandates him to do so."
This proposition is fundamentally undemocratic — Alhaji Murtala Abubakar, President of the Arewa Defence League (ADL).
Alhaji Murtala Abubakar, the President of the Arewa Defence League (ADL), contended that the principle of zoning and rotational presidency was compromised when former President Goodluck Jonathan, a Southerner, ran for and won the presidency in 2011, despite the prevailing expectation that power should remain in the North to complete the "North-South rotation" following President Yar’Adua’s passing. Since that time, the political environment has transformed, with Nigerians now placing greater importance on competence, credibility, and capacity rather than regional entitlement. The notion that power must "rotate" artificially limits democratic choice and is no longer viable in a contemporary Nigeria. A genuine democracy flourishes when citizens are free to elect the most qualified candidate, irrespective of their ethnic or geographical background.
Enforcing an arbitrary one-term limit on a Southern president in 2027 undermines the people's will and implies that leadership should be dictated by regional negotiations rather than by performance and popular support.
If a Southern president excels in their role, why should they be compelled to step down after one term merely to adhere to an antiquated zoning arrangement? The North is home to millions of capable, educated, and politically savvy individuals who can compete for the presidency based on their ideas and leadership abilities—not through clandestine zoning agreements.
The Arewa Defence League advocates for a merit-based system where any candidate, whether Northern or Southern, can run and succeed based on their vision for Nigeria, rather than on artificial rotational pacts. When political positions are distributed based on regional factors instead of competence, it fosters mediocrity and undermines governance, similar to the current state of affairs in the country. Nigeria’s challenges necessitate the best leaders, not those chosen solely to meet a zoning criterion.
The call for a single-term Southern president in 2027 represents a divisive strategy that deepens regional mistrust instead of promoting national unity.
– The North will not be misled again— Alhaji Muhammad Danlami
Alhaji Muhammad Salihu Danlami, the Speaker of the Arewa Youth Assembly, expressed that the North would not be misled again by the arrangement proposed by Peter Obi.
"While not enshrined in the constitution, Nigerians adhere to a gentleman's agreement that power should alternate between the North and South. Following the passing of President Musa Yar’adua, the North sought to fulfill its 8-year term in accordance with this agreement, but we all know the outcome.
"In 2011, the North yielded to the influence of incumbency and permitted President Goodluck Jonathan, who had assured Nigerians of his intention to serve only one term, to be elected, only for him to pursue re-election in 2015. We must also remember that in 2023, after the North's 8 years in power, Atiku Abubakar aimed to keep power in the North, yet he faced significant opposition from within the North, which ultimately led to his defeat.
With this mutual understanding for the unity of our beloved Nigeria, the Southern presidency will persist until 2031, and the North will reject any presidential candidates attempting to promote the notion of a single term, as we have previously been deceived by this in 2011, resulting in great disappointment. The North will not endorse Peter Obi due to his approach to politics, which intertwines religion and ethnicity," he asserted.
– Time will reveal our true loyalties concerning 2027—Alhaji Jamilu Charanchi
In his comments, Alhaji Jamilu Charanchi from the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) stated that only time will disclose where the North's true loyalties lie in 2027.
He remarked, "One of the most paradoxical characteristics of desperate Nigerian politicians is their limitless capacity to promise the world merely to gain votes, yet once they take office, those promises dissipate into nothingness.
The political class in Nigeria has established a significant trust deficit throughout all segments of society.
Fulfilling campaign promises has become an exception rather than the norm. Anyone who continues to believe in such promises without critical examination is merely deceiving themselves. Regarding the year 2027, only time will disclose the true allegiance of the North; it will be actions, not mere words, that will determine that outcome," he concluded.
We cannot place our trust in such promises — Anthony Sani.
In his response, Anthony Sani, the former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), expressed that presidential candidates who commit to serving only one term give him the impression that they are excessively eager for power rather than for public service. The elder statesman remarked, "I have reiterated multiple times that while the North may present a united front on political matters that many northerners share, they seldom speak with a single voice on partisan issues.
This may clarify why Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Abubakar Atiku divided the votes in the North during the previous presidential elections. When candidates promise to serve only one term, it leads me to believe they are overly desperate for power rather than for the service of the populace.
Consequently, I cannot assert that the North will accept such a one-term offer from Peter Obi. Unless President Bola Tinubu performs exceptionally poorly in his first term, which seems unlikely, I anticipate that the North will favor President Bola Tinubu, who has only one term remaining if elected, over Peter Obi, who may change his mind, reminiscent of President Jonathan's decision to contest in 2015," he stated. – The North will not be persuaded by Obi’s assertion — Bitrus Kaze.
Bitrus Kaze, a former Member representing Jos East/Jos South in the National Assembly and a supporter of Obi in the 2023 election, remarked, "That’s a complex situation. Now that Tinubu is President and preparing for a second term.
It appears attractive, sensible, and mature; however, the northern region I am familiar with—the far north, excluding the Middle Belt and the minority tribes in the so-called north—may not be persuaded. The statement is soothing, yet considering the significant influence of the Nigerian Presidency, I remain uncertain whether the north will be convinced.
Perhaps the Middle Belt region and the areas where he previously garnered support may accept and respect his words, but the law does not prohibit a President from seeking a second term.
– Obi’s profile is gaining traction throughout Northern Nigeria —Tanko Yunusa
In the meantime, Alhaji Tanko Yunusa, the Global Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, expressed his belief that Peter Obi’s charitable actions, along with his recent commitment to serve only one term if elected President in 2027, have enhanced Obi’s reputation, particularly in the northern regions of the country.
Tanko stated, “Peter Obi’s proposal to serve a single four-year term will certainly alleviate concerns in certain circles regarding the implications of his electoral success for the gentleman's agreement of alternating political power between the North and South. There is no doubt that Obi’s proposal is being positively received in the north, where his actions and statements are restoring trust.
Recently, the Pantami Emirate in Gombe State honored him with a traditional title. The true political significance of this honor lies in the fact that a respected Northern emirate bestowed one of its highest accolades upon a politician from the South-East.
“Obi’s acceptance in the north, where I originate, is significantly better in 2025 compared to what we witnessed during the 2023 elections. This represents a genuine paradigm shift that is likely to enhance his electoral prospects in future elections. Regarding the single term proposal, Obi remarked that even four years is excessive for what he aims to accomplish. This illustrates his determination and readiness to transform Nigeria.
